SPRAYED CONCRETE LINING

AKA New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is a method of modern tunnel design and construction.

It is well established and predominantly used on larger diameter tunnel construction. The technique first gained attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher between 1957 and 1965 in Austria. Hence the name. It is thought to have revolutionised modern tunnelling and can be seen as a more attractive method from an economic standpoint. The initial ground support is provided by shotcrete in combination with fibre or welded-wire fabric reinforcement, lattice girders and ground reinforcement.

CROSS PASSAGES, UNDERGROUND CHAMBERS AND ADITS

A cross passage is a short tunnel that connects 2 parallel tunnels. These passages are a crucial safety element that enable people to transfer from one tunnel to the other in the event of an emergency, including emergency services. Cross passages are usually a very short in length and therefore the SCL method of construction is preferred. Underground chambers and adits traditionally follow similar construction methods to cross passages, in the sense that they are small, intricate and often have space limitations.

Rorcon have been involved in numerous SCL schemes across the globe, from projects in Australia and Ecuador to numerous projects here in the UK. We have been in involved in the design, methodology and application of such method of tunnelling. From design to construct, SCL shafts, connections, cross passages, and adits or fully SCL constructed tunnels or SCL as a secondary lining. We’ve done it all. Rorcon has extensive experience in the design, methodology, and application of tunnelling methods for cross passages and adits, which has been utilized in numerous projects worldwide. Most recently Rorcon have successfully constructed cross passages chambers and adits on the Tideway central project, completing over 200 linear metres of connection passage ranging from 3-6m diameter.
