BOX JACKING

Box jacking is a tunnelling method that involves the jacking of rectangular reinforced cement concrete (RCC) sections into the ground using high-capacity hydraulic jacks. The practice is used in highway construction as well as in trenchless operations such as constructing culverts under road and rail embankments.

Rorcon has a proven track record of delivering successful box jacking projects, including the construction of a pedestrian underpass beneath the busy East Coast mainline, and providing additional passenger access to Snow Hill station in Birmingham in collaboration with Bam Nuttall. In the case of the East Coast mainline pedestrian underpass, Rorcon utilised their expertise to carefully manage the installation of the box unit under the live railway line while minimizing disruptions to train services. Similarly, the box jacking project for Snow Hill station was carried out with precision to provide additional passenger access without interfering with the station's operations. Rorcon's successful completion of these complex box jacking projects demonstrates our ability to deliver innovative solutions for underground construction, while also ensuring the safety and efficiency of the surrounding infrastructure.

The main benefit of this approach is that it o ers an e ective alternative to disruptive open cut techniques, conventional tunnelling methods being inappropriate so close to the structures above.

TRADITIONAL HAND MINING

Timber headings, AKA traditional hand mining. Is a horizontal technique whereby timber sets are used to support tunnel construction. Typically, the excavation is done by hand using a mixture of compressed air tools and ordinary hand tools with muck shifted via the use of a bogey or similar. The timber heading method offers flexibility and versatility whereby it can be deployed on projects with space limitations or on projects near to or underneath intricate services or structures that cannot be disrupted.
