FINISHING WORK
Finishing work is the concluding stage of construction; in many cases, the overall quality of a building or structure being put into service depends on the quality of its execution. The main types of finishing work in tunnelling include concreting, screeding, and secondary lining.
SECONDARY LINING
The tunnel lining construction method will depend on the ground conditions and geological strata. A secondary lining is a concrete tunnel liner that is installed permanently and is often done after mining operations are finished.
Secondary lining provides tunnels with further resistance to abrasion, helping to ensure required design life is achieved, while providing a smooth and consistent finish. Secondary linings are usually formed using usually bespoke shutters that allow cast-in-place concrete to cure onsite and are key in tunnels requiring very specific finishes such as aerodynamic high-speed train networks, or sewers like the Tideway project in London. The SCL method can also be used as a method of secondary lining method in terrains with varying geotechnical profiles such as London Clay or Alpine rock mass.
LEAK SEALING / CAULKING AND PRE CAST
Leak sealing, also known as caulking, is a process of sealing gaps, cracks, or joints in surfaces to prevent the escape of fluids, gases, or other materials. This can be done using various materials, such as sealants, caulking compounds, or adhesives.
Leak sealing is commonly used in the construction industry to seal gaps and joints in buildings to prevent water infiltration or air leaks, which can cause structural damage or reduce energy efficiency. It can also be used in underground construction projects, such as tunnels or pipelines, to prevent leaks of water, gas, or other fluids.
Rorcon played a key role in providing specialist leak sealing services to CVB Tideway East for the construction of 11-kilometer bored tunnel. The project involved constructing a new tunnel beneath the River Thames in London, which required a range of specialized construction techniques to ensure its successful completion.
