Stratford City Bridges- Tunnelling Works
The development works at Stratford City in East London were undertaken as part of the requirement for the 2012 Olympic Games to improve infrastructure in and around the new Olympic park.
As part of a package on the "Stratford City Bridges," Morgan Sindall was awarded a section of deep drainage works. Rorcon was appointed as their specialist subcontractor for the deep drainage works.
The scheme involved the construction of 6 PC Segmental Shafts constructed as caissons with sizes ranging from 6m ID to 4.5m ID. These shafts were constructed using segmental lining techniques. The drainage lines were installed using microtunnelling techniques, which utilise a remote-controlled Iseki Microtunnelling equipment to create small diameter tunnels.
Accuracy was essential to avoid disruption to surrounding infrastructure and maintain alignment through congested ground.
Rorcon’s teams delivered the works efficiently, enabling the installation of new drainage assets without the need for disruptive open-cut excavation. The approach reduced impact on the surrounding area while maintaining programme certainty.
This approach allowed for a non-disruptive installation of the new drainage lines while minimizing disturbance to the existing infrastructure and minimizing the environmental impact.
The microtunnelling technique was particularly useful in densely populated urban areas where conventional open trenching methods would be impractical.
The successful completion of this project played a significant role in the improvement of the infrastructure in East London, providing enhanced drainage systems for the local community, and supporting the 2012 Olympic Games.
