Llanelli Rainscape
Rorcon supported the Llanelli Rainscape flood alleviation scheme, a major programme aimed at reducing flood risk and improving sewer capacity within the town centre. The works involved a combination of shaft construction, microtunnelling and pumping station installation.
Rorcon delivered multiple segmental shafts and approximately 1,400 metres of microtunnelled sewer beneath busy urban streets. The works required careful planning to minimise disruption while maintaining accuracy and production rates.
The project aimed to build a 1400mm Flood Relief Sewer to alleviate the problem of vast volumes of stormwater in the region. The Rorcon team constructed the 4.5-6m segmental shafts using a 1.5m ID pre-cast concrete jacking pipe by caisson method to drive over 1400LM of tunnel beneath Llanelli. The pumping station, ID 11m, showcased Micro Tunnelling techniques to complete the project.
Our teams worked closely with the main contractor and Welsh Water representatives to coordinate excavation, tunnelling and reinstatement activities. The programme demanded flexibility, consistent resourcing and a strong focus on safety due to the proximity of the public and live services.
The project was completed successfully and now provides long-term flood relief benefits for the local area. Rorcon’s involvement demonstrates our capability to deliver complex underground drainage works in urban environments
The Rorcon team faced some challenging ground conditions but worked collaboratively to overcome them and deliver the project to the highest standards.
